Milestone: V.1 of Draft Guidelines, following multiple consultations on 620
September saw the convening of 25 experts in Johannesburg, along with the Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa, Hon. Geereesha Topsy Sonoo. The quest: to start the next phase in developing African guidelines on access to data.
Supported by APC, the consultation was organised by Research ICT Africa (RIA) on behalf of the African Alliance for Access to Data.
RIA also undertook the research and drafting that incorporated insights form 14 live consultations, in a first draft of the guidelines.
A second version will be discussed at FiFAfrica in Windhoek, Namibia in late September, and a third version will be put out for wider public feedback after that.
Ultimately, the intention is to provide the Rapporteur with elements to consider as she reports back to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
